Using Claude for Business Contract Reviews

Many people are using artificial intelligence (AI) for more and more tasks. Business owners are also using it to get work completed and save money.
Reviewing contracts can be especially time-consuming and costly. AI can be helpful in this regard, but is it a good idea?
Anthropic’s new “Claude for Small Business” platform is turning heads for one standout feature: AI-powered contract review that can analyze legal documents in minutes without immediately hiring a lawyer. The tool is designed to help small businesses identify risky clauses, hidden fees, and unfavorable terms before signing agreements.
The contract review feature, called /review-contract, lets users upload PDFs, Word documents, or pasted text directly into Claude. The AI then scans the agreement for potential red flags involving liability, indemnification, intellectual property rights, auto-renewal language, payment obligations, confidentiality terms, and termination provisions. Claude highlights risks using a color-coded framework and explains which sections may deserve closer scrutiny.
For small business owners, the appeal is speed and cost savings. Traditional legal review can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars per contract. Claude can provide a first-pass review in under a minute, helping businesses spot questionable language before sending the contract to an attorney for final review.
Anthropic says the platform is aimed at businesses that typically lack in-house legal departments. The company recently expanded Claude’s legal capabilities with integrations for tools such as DocuSign, Microsoft 365, and LegalZoom, allowing users to review documents, compare contract versions, and even connect with licensed attorneys if additional legal guidance is needed.
Using Claude for this purpose is not free, though. You will have to run Claude Cowork in the Claude app. This requires a Claude Pro account, which will set you back at least $20 a month.
Within the Claude app, select Cowork, and then Customize. Select the small business plugin. Then, in the prompt box, type /review-contract. Choose your contract file and Claude will get to work right away.
Legal professionals and AI researchers say tools like Claude can dramatically reduce the time spent on repetitive contract analysis. Some studies suggest advanced AI models now perform competitively with junior lawyers in identifying common legal issues in contracts.
Still, experts caution that AI contract review is not a replacement for legal advice. Lawyers and legal tech professionals note that AI systems can still miss nuanced issues, misunderstand context, or hallucinate incorrect interpretations. Most recommend using Claude as an assistant for spotting potential problems and speeding up review. However, it should not be used as a substitute for a qualified attorney, especially when it comes to high-stakes agreements.
