Eminem’s Publisher Sues Meta for Copyright Infringement

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is a company worth more than $1 trillion. Companies of this size often think they can do whatever they want, but that is not the case. The laws still apply to them, and copyright infringement is no exception.

Eight Mile Style, which is the publisher for rapper Eminem, is suing Meta for alleged copyright infringement. The publishing company is asking for a permanent injunction against the future use of Eminem’s music. The lawsuit is also seeking monetary damages from Meta.

Eight Mile Style is accusing Meta of using the rapper’s songs without proper licensing. The copyright infringement suit was filed on May 30 in Detroit federal court. While Eminem is not named as a direct party, the lawsuit cites unauthorized use of 243 of his songs.

Eight Mile Style claims that it has asked Meta multiple times to remove Eminem’s

music from the platform. However, instrumental and karaoke versions of the rapper’s songs are still being illegally used on Meta and have been used in millions of videos. Eight Mile Style also alleges that Meta encourages the use of Eminem’s songs by featuring them in curated sections like “Trending” and “For You.”

According to the lawsuit, Meta accessed the music through a 2020 deal with Audiam, a digital rights company. However, Audiam lacked authorization to license the music.

Eight Mile Style is seeking monetary damages from Meta and is also demanding a permanent injunction against the use of Eminem’s music in the future. The lawsuit alleges that the ongoing infringement by Meta needs to stop, as it is exploiting the creative efforts of musical artists.

Unfortunately, Eminem has dealt with a lot of legal drama in the past month. A man who had been stalking Eminem for years was recently convicted of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking.

What Businesses Can Do About Copyright Infringement

Businesses can take several steps to prevent and respond to copyright infringement effectively:

  • Educate employees. Train staff about copyright laws and the risks of using unauthorized content.
  • Use licensed or original content. Ensure all media, such as images, music, software, and other content, are properly licensed or created in-house.
  • Monitor usage: Use tools to track whether your copyrighted material (such as logos, photos, or content) is being used online without permission.

Businesses can respond to infringement by sending a cease and desist letter. This is a formal legal warning demanding the infringing party stop using your content. If necessary, you may need to take legal action. Be prepared to file a copyright infringement lawsuit in federal court for damages or injunctions.
